Saroj's story is the story of all those women who are married and often compelled to embrace their identity as a mother, wife or daughter-in-law Somewhere along this path, they lose their identity and talent. Saroj's story would have been similar if she hadn't taken a step forward and emerged out of her comfort zone. Saroj hails from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a city known for its abundant culture and spirituality. She got married when she was young. Her marriage was hastily arranged due to her mother's terminal illness, who wished to witness her daughter's wedding. As a result, Saroj missed her exams, resulting in her completing only high school studies. After getting married, she chose to become a homemaker and dedicated herself to raising her two children. One day, Saroj took her son to an optometrist to address a minor issue with his eye. Little did she know that this visit to the Vision Centre would change her life. Sadiya, the optometrist, not only treated her son but also pointed Saroj towards a new direction, encouraging her to pursue something for herself. Sadiya suggested that Saroj work in a Vision Centre, allowing her to establish her own identity and achieve financial independence.

Following this advice, Saroj took a step forward, showed faith in herself, and the universe listened to her. Saroj's journey began as a Community Health Worker (CHW) at the Dhampur Vision Centre established under Standard Chartered’s Seeing is Believing programme in partnership with Mission for Vision and CL Gupta Eye Institute. This marked the beginning of Saroj's career in eye health, where she was delighted to work alongside her role model, Sadiya. During her early days at the Vision Centre or in the field, she faced challenges in convincing people about eye health and raising awareness. However, with unwavering support from her mentor, Saroj quickly adapted, gained more experience, and engaged with diverse communities. With two women leading and managing the Vision Centre, the team observed a surge in female patient visits and noted the positive response from women during eye health awareness campaigns. This has gradually made Saroj's job easier. As a result, she has been able to connect with more patients and played a key role in increasing patient footfall. Saroj strongly believes that eye problems and poverty are closely connected and can hinder the progress of individuals and communities. With a noticeable prevalence of poverty in the Dhampur region, she has committed herself to guaranteeing that every individual in this area can easily access high-quality eye care. Her dedication to the community has earned her appreciation from all the villagers. She finds fulfillment in receiving blessings from patients, being invited to their homes for lunch, and being treated as a beloved family member. This role has transformed her beyond being solely a homemaker, mother, and wife, allowing her to establish her own identity. Moreover, she now shares financial duties with her husband and contributes to family savings. She conveys a powerful message to all women.

"Women must break free from traditional roles. We should venture out, seek new experiences, and build an identity that fills us with pride."
