HISTORY

Tulsi Trust, established by Mr. Mithumal Tulsi Chanrai in 1975, works as a non-profit organisation on social initiatives in health, education, poverty alleviation and more. His son, Mr. Jagdish M. Chanrai, along with fellow businessmen and associates, came together to form Mission for Vision (MFV) from this parent entity because of the incredible potential to eradicate poverty through enhanced sight laid out in front of them which encouraged them to act.

Blindness is largely a consequence of poverty and people with visual impairment are more likely to become economically challenged if eye care is inaccessible. The certainty that eradicating avoidable blindness enhances productivity and leads to social and economic equality powered MFV to provide the underprivileged communities with access to the right treatment at the right time.

Mission for Vision has acted as a catalyst by strengthening several institutions towards excellence through equitable services.

Dr. Prakash Mirchandani

Dr. Mirchandani gave up his medical practice to devote his services to the marginalised sections of society. He has been associated with the Tulsi Trust since its inception, including the initiation of the Eye Care Program in India as well as Nigeria, and is one of the architects of the Community Ophthalmology Program. He is currently a Trustee at Tulsi Trust. He has been the prime mover in the establishment of Mission for Vision and is a Founder Trustee. He also holds the position as Trustee for several trusts in India and overseas.

Mr. Arjun Waney

Mr. Waney is the Chairman, Managing Director and principal shareholder of Argent Fund Management Limited. He is renowned for his work in the field of hospitality in London, England where he has created various highly acclaimed restaurant brands like Zuma, Le Petite Maison, Coya and the Arts Club and Mayfair. His true passion however lies in his charity projects. He has been a philanthropist for many years and in 2001 founded his family trust, the Savitri Waney Charitable Trust which supports the provision of high impact healthcare and development for poor rural communities in India and Nigeria.

Mr. Dayal Chanrai

Over the last 48 years, Mr. Chanrai has developed rich business experience working in the Far East Asia, United Kingdom and West Africa. He has held Directorship positions in businesses in a diverse range including textile manufacturing, general trading, retail and agricultural development. Mr. Chanrai is currently a Director in Kewalram Chanrai Holdings Limited and also holds the position of a Trustee at the Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, India.

Mr. Devidas Naraindas Budhrani

Mr. Budhrani is an entrepreneur, industrialist, promoter and co-founder of several companies incorporated in a manifold of sectors globally. Contributing to the welfare of society has been a clear calling for Mr. Budhrani from a young age. He founded the Naraindas Morbai Budhrani Trust in memory of his parents to reach out to the neediest communities across the country. In clear alignment with the Millennium Development Goals, the trust continues to explore opportunities to change people’s lives through various initiatives in health, education and community development. This has translated into a staunch support for MFV’s mission to eradicate avoidable blindness across the country.

Mr. Gulu Waney

Mr. Gulu Waney is an Indian born entrepreneur based in the United Arab Emirates with degrees from the University of Bombay and University of California, San Diego. With experience across multiple professional platforms, he is widely recognized as one of Dubai’s premier industrialists and restauranteurs. Over 20 years ago, he founded Standard Carpets Industries LLC, a flooring manufacturing company that exports products to over 60 countries worldwide. He is a co-founder and part owner of more than 20 restaurants worldwide with locations in over 10 cities globally. His most notable UAE establishments include the award-winning Zuma, Coya and La Petite Maison. A proud philanthropist, he is actively involved with a number of social organisations apart from his trusteeship at Mission for Vision. Most notably, on his family’s entity The Savitri Waney Charitable Trust.

Mr. Jagdish M. Chanrai

Mr. Chanrai, is the Founder of Mission for Vision. He is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who graduated from Mumbai University before taking over the family business in Nigeria. The family was engaged in industry, trade and finance and operated across three continents – Africa, Asia and Europe. Mr. Chanrai deeply believes in his philosophy of "Caring Capitalism®." It has always been his desire to devote 5% of his time and his income to help the less fortunate. His belief has guided his efforts in establishing the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation in Nigeria and Mission for Vision in India. Mr. Chanrai is a Trustee of the Jaslok Hospital and Research Center in Mumbai; one of the first multi-specialty hospitals in India which was established by the Chanrai family in 1973. He is also a Trustee of several other trusts in India, the U.K. and Nigeria.

Mr. Sivaramakrisna Subramonian

Mr. Subramonian is a Chartered Accountant, but has significant exposure to designing and developing computer systems. He spent the first 12 years of his professional life in Mumbai, including with the Tata Group. He then transitioned into service with Mr. Jagdish Chanrai. He spent four years in Nigeria and the moved into handling internal audit and systems based out of the U.K. for 10 years. He was inspired to join social initiatives that bettered the world around him in his retirement. Based out of Chennai since 1994, he has dedicated his life to the development sector through Tulsi Trust and Mission for Vision.

Ms. Bharati J. Chanrai

Mrs. Chanrai grew up in Mumbai in a family whose legacy of giving back to her community is something she has carried on. During her 20 years in Nigeria after marriage, she was actively engaged in social causes such as a home for motherless children in Lagos. When she moved to London, she was the President of the Sindhi Nari Saba for many years, which raised funds to send to India for Mission for Vision. Every Monday, she and her friends distributed food to the homeless and every week she worked as a volunteer at a local hospice. She is also a trustee of Tulsi Trust, Mumbai and Tulsi Eye Hospital, Nashik. In raising her family, she has tried to guide them to live with the same principles of helping others who are less fortunate. She currently splits her time traveling to the U.K., U.S., Dubai, and Singapore.

Elizabeth Kurian

CEO

Elizabeth comes with over 27 years of experience in the corporate and development sectors across organisations. She has worked at MS University of Baroda, Nielsen India and Sightsavers, where she was Chief Executive for India and then Director of Global Advocacy. She has led strategic planning in large programmes with complex, diverse organisational and operating environments. Leading highly skilled multi-function teams in Asia and Africa, she has pioneered and fostered significant growth and transformation through social policy change and innovations. Through her role in various boards and advisory panels, Elizabeth has influenced policy and practice at several national and international settings and has various awards and research publications to her credit. Her key areas of interest include governance, strategic leadership, policy, research, multi-function and cross-cultural people management.

Elizabeth has a Master’s degree in Nutrition (University first rank holder and gold medalist) and has done an Executive Programme in Business Management from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. She has also completed leadership and management courses from Harvard Business School, the Open University Business School, UK and Roffey Park, UK.
