Visionary stories
Old age, new problems

If Neelammal and her husband found it tough to fend for themselves, things have only become harder since their only son died. The aged couple now have their daughter-in-law and a granddaughter to take care of. Through one grocery store in Ambatt‚ur in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district, they make ends meet. However, Neelammal’s eyesight had been failing for the last few years. A lack of adequate finances meant that she couldn’t stop working at the grocery store either. Things became so bad that she would often mix up products customers asked for or make mistakes while counting money. She a‚ttended the Menambedu camp, where it was diagnosed that she had cataract. She got it operated at the MFV-supported Sankara Nethralaya Jaslok Chanrai Opthalmic Centre (SNJCOC) in Chennai. Today, she wears prescription glasses and is comfortably able to work at the shop and contribute to the family income.
