A community eye health project has also been initiated by MFV in Arunachal Pradesh, with Ramkrishna Mission Hospital. This project would provide services through an integrated vision
centre approach at selected public health centres (PHC) in the Northeastern state of Arunachal, as
well as have community screening and referral of patients from Assam.
With this partnership, MFV further strengthens its presence in the Northeast, a critical region, as there
are few service providers here. The vision centres at the PHC, managed by the Karuna trust on behalf of
the government, would integrate eye healthcare with a general development organisation’s functions. It would also undertake capacity building of all stakeholders to ensure sustainability.
The goal is to eradicate avoidable blindness across Arunachal Pradesh and the adjoining Sonitpur and
North Lakhimpur districts of Assam state. It will also be sensitising the community members and health
staff regarding timely identification and referral of patients with eye ailments.
Furthermore, to eliminate avoidable blindness in Assam, a tripartite MoU has been signed between
MFV, Operation Eyesight Universal and the Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya. The plan would focus on
the Kamrup and Nalbari districts, providing free health services for the

population. It would involve outreach activities to identify people who need eye health services and
to create awareness about the different ailments and their respective treatment procedures.
MFV’s partnership in Meghalaya with the Society for Promotion of Eyecare and Sight (SPECS), a part
of Bansara Eye Care Centre (BECC), has also been re-drafted to cater to the locals’ needs. In order to
eliminate avoidable blindness in the Jaintia Hills district of the state, the programme would increase
awareness among locals about eye care. It would also involve the government’s health department
to address the issue.
