CEO’s note

Hello,

I am happy to share that in this 2nd quarter of 2015, Mission for Vision (MFV) embarked on two significant partnerships. One is the launch of Mission Shiksha, a National Association for the Blind (NAB) India programme in Mumbai. The other is the inauguration of L V Prasad Eye Institute’s (LVPEI) Naraindas Morbai Budhrani Eye Centre in Odisha.

Mission Shiksha is an initiative towards strengthening Mathematical skills of children with Visual Impairments. We looked at three key challenges being faced by children with visual impairments and the most critical and unaddressed one was studying mathematics in higher classes. We believe, with this programme the child will have a choice of whether she or he wants to pursue mathematics and take a corresponding career path.

In Rayagada, Odisha which is one of the poorest states in India with weak developmental indicators, comparable to many vulnerable countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, MFV begins a partnership with the highly respected L V Prasad Eye Institute’s (LVPEI) Naraindas Morbai Budhrani Eye Centre. This new centre is geared to provide high quality and comprehensive eyecare services to communities in and around Rayagada district, an area challenged by much higher poverty levels than most parts of Odisha. It also takes us closer to our mission of working in all the states in India that have a high need for quality eye healthcare in line with our philosophy of Caring Capitalism.

This quarter also saw Mr. Jagdish Chanrai, Founder, Mission for Vision share his stories, insights into philanthropy, and lessons learned, in Singapore at the launch event of 'Philanthropic Lives'. This is a publication by J P Morgan Private Bank in Singapore, and highlights the journeys of leading philanthropists from across the globe.

As in every quarter, the Community Impact Assessment done six months after surgery, amongst randomly selected patients shows that 90% of them have visual acuity in the good (6/6 – 6/18) category.

I would like to end by thanking you for your continued support. Do write to me with your suggestions and feedback at elizabeth.kurian@mfvindia.org

Regards,
Elizabeth Kurian
